Pan is Beautiful XII – Orchestra Prelims

Over the weekend, fourteen conventional steel orchestras were vying for eight places in the National Steelband Music Festival, Pan Is Beautiful twelve, at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain. Each band played the test piece, Black Stalin’s Mr Pan Maker and a tune of choice.

For this competition an orchestra can be any combination of pan players/musicians playing steelpan instruments with a minimum of 35 players and not exceed 50, inclusive of rhythm. Playing time is limited to 18 minutes. The Adjudicators for this category were Dr. Anne Marion Osbourne, Merle Albino-De Coteau, Lambert Phillip and Joslynne Sealey. Over one million dollars is at stake in this leg of the competition with the winner receiving $250,000.

Top honours went to Codrington Pan Family follow by Tropical Angel Harps, Invaders, Exodus, Renegades, Couva Joylanders, Diatonic and Pan Elders in 8th place.

The schedule for the finals are as follows; the Soloists/Ensembles on Friday November 9th, Single Pans on Sunday November 10th, and Orchestras on Saturday November 16th. All finals will be held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.
